The cervical ripening balloon is used to facilitate induction of labor by mechanically dilating the cervix in patients whose cervix is unsuitable for drug induction.
It is placed in the cervical canal, and its inflatable balloons exert gentle but constant pressure to promote opening of the cervix.
The stylet included in this item serves to facilitate the insertion of the catheter by giving it more rigidity, which improves the positioning of the device.
Once the balloon is in place, it can remain in place for up to 12 hours before being removed or expelled naturally when dilation has progressed.
Benefits
Non-pharmacological method: Reduces the use of prostaglandins or oxytocin, thereby lowering the risk of undesirable side effects.Natural dilation: Promotes natural dilation by applying uniform pressure to the cervix, mimicking the physiological process.Effectiveness with immature cervix: Helps shorten the induction time and increases the likelihood of vaginal delivery.Contraindications: Can be used in patients with contraindications to pharmacological agents, such as women with a previous cesarean section.User comfort: Stylet facilitates insertion, enhancing practitioner comfort during placement.
Applications
Unfavorable cervix: Labor induction in patients with an unfavorable cervix (low Bishop score).Therapeutic alternative: An alternative to pharmacological methods when prostaglandins are contraindicated.Usage setting: Used in maternity and obstetrics under medical supervision.Combined method: Can be used alongside other induction methods to improve the chances of spontaneous labor.General approach: A widely adopted option in obstetrics to promote progressive cervical ripening and reduce the need for more invasive interventions.
